the time it was Friday

IMG_7699 IMG_7700 IMG_7701 IMG_7702 IMG_7705 IMG_7706 IMG_7711 IMG_7712

It’s funny and awesome and strange that Friday is still as amazing and alluring and wonderful as it was when I was 6. I love Fridays. Usually they are uneventful involving an early dinner with my parents or something ordered in here at home with Joel followed by both of us falling asleep in front of the TV well before 10pm. But Friday is still like the high five of week days. You know you have made it. You know you get a break. You know that you get some downtime. And  you might even have a weekend adventure.

Today I am especially excited. Because starting tomorrow I can finally shop again. And wear all my own clothes again. And share a pair of jeans that I bought at the tail end of January with all of you. This no shopping thing has been good. I have learned that I don’t in fact need something new to wear every single day. That occasionally my preexisting wardrobe can perform pretty well with out accompaniment. That online shopping counts as shopping also. And that I have way too much clothing as is. Oh, and that shopping is in fact my cardio…

So, for March, although I am not going to be ‘not shopping’ I am going to try a little something else. I am going to try to buy things I need rather than want (and let me tell you when I want something I  can get really crafty with reasons I need it). I am going to only add things to my wardrobe that are versatile and really flipping amazing. And for every single item I add to my wardrobe in March, one thing has to vacate the premises. Yup, my closet is going to be like the hottest night club in town. One in one out. You know, except with clothes.

Wish me luck. Oh and tomorrow morning, as soon as the department store doors open, I am buying those shoes.

The time I loved shoes

Shoes-MK here

I have to confess. I went shopping yesterday. Well browsing anyway. I didn’t buy. But I fell in love. With something amazing. Shoes actually. Tall, ridiculous, totally impractical, wear maybe once a year shoes. They are glorious. They have a 4 inch heel. They are strappy. They are black. They have studs. They are stunning. They are Michael Kors. Also, they are $225.

I have never spent $225 dollars on a pair of shoes. Sure I have taken a spin through Saks shoe department when in Chicago or New York. I have tried on a pair or two of Christian Louboutins. I have dreamed of a closet filled with Tori Burch flats instead of Toms.

And these shoes, these I can’t help but imagine all the places they belong. The evening I would spend in them.  I have already built an outfit around them. I have imagined them in San Juan drinking Pina Coladas. I can see them taking a taxi in London to this little Italian place that Joel and I love in Notting Hill.  I. Can’t. Stop. Thinking. About. Them.

I want them. I need them. But that Caribbean vacation I want to impulse book is just one web browser over. Waiting for me to confirm. And I am just not sure I have room in my bag or my wallet for these little beauties.  And the best little day dream i have involves Joel and I, on the beach we got married on. In $5 flip flops from Old Navy. And it’s perfect. And my legs look just fine. And I can take adventures and run and do handstands. All for the price of a pair of shoes…

So beautiful shoes, I know there is a good home out there somewhere for you. I am just not sure it’s with me.

Living in a place with such harsh and unpredictable seasons is funny. In the Winter we can’t wait to wear summer clothes, in the summer all we want for is a 65 degree day when we can slip on jeans. It really messes with my wardrobe. Additionally on more than one occasion I have come down midsummer to find Harvey trying to slip on his Holiday bow-tie. Glad I am not alone in my wardrobe dysmorphia.

So today, even though all I want is to crank up the heat, slip on a pair of oversized jean shorts and a tank top and watch Blue Crush on repeat,  no judgement. Instead I am going to channel that time thcomes every summer. The day that I don’t want to shave my legs or be in a swim suit. The day I am tired of being hot and sweating through a tank top trying to walk from the Target parking lot into the reprieve of their air conditioning. The day when all you want is a hint of cool fall air. A need to throw tights on under your favorite dress. The day you buy new boots but know you won’t be able to wear then for 3 months. I am going to wear boots and tights. I am going to not shave my legs. I am going to enjoy picking out all of my cold weather accessories.

By gosh I am going to have a good attitude. Even though all I want to do is have a small temper tantrum and impulse book a trip to the Caribbean. I am going to enjoy wearing these tights and these boots knowing a day will come where I will want for this outfit. I am going to love layering a sweater over a flannel because someday soon layering a shirt over my bra is going to be too much. I am going to think positively.

However, I might impulse book a trip to the Caribbean.  I am not perfect.

What item of clothing are you dreaming of right now?

I know, I know. I totally disappeared right in the middle of our no shopping, wearing only clothing from our $300 wardrobe month. But for good reason.

Last Thursday, my mom and I packed our car and headed to a very strange place called Wichita to sell clothes, talk fashion, eat carni food and basically get out of town for a minute. We were at the Women’s Fair, an annual event. We had a booth for our boutique @jollly’s.  We saw the Flint Hills and a fast-food ‘fresh seafood’ restaurant. In Kansas. (Sorry to report we didn’t try it out…) We met a lot of people. Some of them awesome. Some of them strange. We were in a fashion show-well we weren’t but our clothes were. My mom bought me Toms wedges for my birthday which are the CUTEST EVER. We sampled lots of roasted nuts. We made countless phone calls home to check on the  husbands and dogs. I FaceTime’d Harvey twice. We watched one Lifetime movie. We made new friends. We traveled a lot of miles. We drank too many cups of coffee. And we had so much fun.

If you have a mom, go give her a hug or a high five. Or both. Weekends like this make me realize how lucky I am, as well as my four brothers, Harvey, my husband and my brothers wives/girlfriends that we all get to have such a great lady in our lives. So mom, thanks for taking adventures with me.

For most of the weekend, we were wearing 1 of 3 things: our jammies (which unknowingly we packed matching jammies- VS pink flannels that Joel says make me look like the easter bunny), our travel clothes which consisted of sweats and oversized t-shirts from past trips to the Carribean, or skinny jeans and tank tops that we are able to throw different things from @jolly’s on over throughout the day. Needless to say it is hard getting back into the swing of, you know, getting dressed.

Since we are in our last week of no shopping I decided I would spice monday up with the one and only ZEBRA sweater. I love this sweater, if you recall from the previous post (read more here) this guy is from the jr. department of Macy’s. It was practically free. And it brings me such joy.

What are you all wearing today to bring Joy to the world?

Glad to be back!

the time it was Spring

It’s Spring today. Like for real. Today it’s 60 degrees out according to the weather channel my car thermometer. Which after the last few weeks feels like 83 degrees. Which means it is Spring today. If only for one day. And Harvey and I, we are going to freakin enjoy it.

It’s Spring today. Like for real. Today several boxes showed up at my ‘job’. And guess what was inside? My online boutique’s SPRING LINE. (Oh I forgot to mention, my day job is running an online boutique with my mom. It doesn’t seem fair to call it a job so from this point forward let’s just call it our adventure). Since fulfilling one of my childhood dreams of opening the boutique in 2012, along with eating crepes under the Eiffel Tower and wearing tutus in my everyday life,  I have lived in retail time. In the Spring I am thinking of Fall and in the Fall I am planning for Spring, rareley. But for a few days I get to enjoy the arrivals of the line for the actual season we are currently enjoying. And Spring, you are gorgeous. Both inside and out. At least for one day.

It’s Spring today. Like for real. And I am enjoying getting to wear Toms with no socks and not worrying about my feet being cold or wet or covered in snow. I am enjoying getting to wear this amazing sweater (SO CHEAP) without having to layer. I am enjoying wearing a scarf for fashion rather than pure necessity. I am enjoying how vital a part of my wardrobe these green pants are becoming. I am enjoying wearing necklaces as bracelets. I am enjoying dreaming of summer vacations. I am enjoying my dirty hair thrown into a bun. I am enjoying the adventure that Tuesday brings.

It’s Spring today. Like for real. What are you doing with it?

the time I wore over the knee boots

IMG_6121 IMG_6114 IMG_6109 IMG_6106 IMG_6097 IMG_6100T-shirt-seen here//Skirt-seen here//Tights-seen here and here//Boots-old and amazing-similar here

I have to be honest. The first time (and every time since) I watched Pretty Women I kind of liked Julia Roberts look pre Rodeo Drive make over. I mean she had that insane hair that was wild and carefree, the dress with the cutouts was once very risqué is now something you would see at every prom on no fewer than 15 high school girls, and those boots-SHUT UP. I loved those boots. Yes, they were a bit shiny and they had that whole zipper issue, but they were so incredibly iconic. I wanted a pair. I needed a pair.

So fast forward to 2012 when over the knee boots crept into style without anyone noticing. I went over the knee crazy. I got black ones, I got brown ones, I  got suede ones, I got leather ones. And then one day, while perusing the Victorias Secret shoe website, I met these. And I had to have them. Now truth be told, I haven’t found that many occasions that call for a 4 inch heel, over the knee thigh high suede boot, but every time I slip them on, I feel a little closer to Vivian Ward. Just misunderstood, wild and free, trying to get by, you know, minus the whole hooker thing.

Bonus, the total for this outfit: T-shirt-$3.99//Skirt-$5.99 which means basically free. Oh and so cute.

the time I cooked all day…

IMG_6302 IMG_6312 IMG_6350 IMG_6479 IMG_6464 IMG_6491 IMG_6390 IMG_6400 IMG_6404 IMG_6409Well kids, this time last year Joel and I were across the ocean in London. We spent a really spectacular week there. Joel worked, I shopped. All was right in the world. Tehehehe. In between we celebrated Valentine’s Day there. The night of we walked all along the River Thames, had dinner in a fabulous little pub overlooking the water with a breathtaking view of the completely gorgeous Tower Bridge and ended the night with tea and biscuits back at our hotel. It was a perfect night. It was a perfect Valentine’s Day. You just don’t match that kind of wonderful.

483817_10151313844305684_2042309721_nWhich is why today i am spending the day covered in flour making us pot pies and giant chocolate chip cookies. And drinking mimosas. It’s a morning drink. So it’s fine. I checked.

I would have shared a picture of my outfit today but unfortunately it is oversized PINK (both in brand and in color) sweats and the dreaded Mount Gay Rum shirt that i am not supposed to wear. (Revisit that situation here) so I will spare you the details. Instead i will just share this message from Harvey for the Interwebs. If anyone is interested in being Harvey’s Valentine this year please leave a comment below. He will get back with you.

Wear something fabulous and overindulge just a bit tonight. Take yourself for an amazing date. Or whip potpies. I hear they are ‘really easy’ to make…

We will meet back up next week to talk clothes. Until then have a really fantastic day.
