the time I got back in the saddle

IMG_9756Ok, ok, ok… I know I have been absolutely MIA. And i would love to say that I am very busy, or very important or was asked to save the world or at least review the satellite maps in search of Malaysia flight 370. But all of these things would be ranging from sort of true to out and out lies so instead I will just say I am sorry. I am back. Let’s not dwell on it.

Some things that have happened in the past week:

I finished season 4 of LOST. I can’t help but think this is the best piece of television I have watched since the first two seasons of the OC. I am only kind of kidding.

I did some awesome yoga.

I hung out with Harvey and Joel.

I turned 30.

And no, I am not upset about it. But it did get me thinking. So last year was a bit wild. We moved. A lot. We lived in my parents basement and out of suitcases. I quit my job. I started a boutique. Joel switched jobs. Harvey got a new bed. A lot happened. And through it all my joy got a kinda lost. Not to say I was unhappy, I was just busy and didn’t take time out everyday to look around and realize that life is pretty effing awesome. That the world it pretty amazing. That everyday, even the ones spent watching LOST marathons or aggravated or in our jammies, are absolutely beautiful. What I will say about turning 30 is that I don’t want another year to pass with me slightly below the surface of life. Living it but not seeing the everyday clearly. So for the next year, the year of 30, I am going to do some stuff. I mean scary, awesome, real living stuff. Specifically I am going to do 30 things.  And I ask you to join me. You can follow along with the journey and check out my growing list here. Oh and if you have something that you think i HAVE to do, email me. I will add it to the list.

Let’s live and be awesome.

the time I was Kelly Kapowski

I have always had a thing for Kelly Kapowski. As a brunette unwilling to ever lighten my hair, the role models were few and far between. Apparently our hair color makes us really exceptional side kicks ready to join any adventure but totally inadequate at hosting our own. Kelly was the freaking star and she was amazing and wonderful and she got the guy in the end and she taught me so many vital lessons during my youth (and occasionally on present day Saturday mornings when Joel and I are bored). And she did all of this as a brunette. And usually in a high waisted skirt and Keds. Or a matching floral crop top and denim. Or in light wash ripped jeans.

Which leads us to this little number in which i was apparently channeling her. The sweater and lace tank are such a cute combo. The shoes were a Top Shop find on their opening weekend in NYC-aka the worst day to enter Top Shop EVER. But these jeans… these jeans are rocking my whole world right now. I love them. I want to wear them every day. I have tried. I even tried to wear them to Joel’s hometown of Concordia, Missouri. It’s a lovely place. If you haven’t been I would suggest a drive through. It’s a small town meant for a Lifetime Movie. I am sure there are some Kapowski fans there, however, when i slipped these ripped up little beauties on Joel suggested I change. He didn’t think Concordia would understand the purchase of pre-destroyed jeans much less revel in their amazingness. Maybe next year.

So for now these jeans will be confined to Kansas City. And I will try to wear them only every other day. Until my floral crop top and matching denim arrives of course.

the time I was content…

Living in a place with such harsh and unpredictable seasons is funny. In the Winter we can’t wait to wear summer clothes, in the summer all we want for is a 65 degree day when we can slip on jeans. It really messes with my wardrobe. Additionally on more than one occasion I have come down midsummer to find Harvey trying to slip on his Holiday bow-tie. Glad I am not alone in my wardrobe dysmorphia.

So today, even though all I want is to crank up the heat, slip on a pair of oversized jean shorts and a tank top and watch Blue Crush on repeat,  no judgement. Instead I am going to channel that time thcomes every summer. The day that I don’t want to shave my legs or be in a swim suit. The day I am tired of being hot and sweating through a tank top trying to walk from the Target parking lot into the reprieve of their air conditioning. The day when all you want is a hint of cool fall air. A need to throw tights on under your favorite dress. The day you buy new boots but know you won’t be able to wear then for 3 months. I am going to wear boots and tights. I am going to not shave my legs. I am going to enjoy picking out all of my cold weather accessories.

By gosh I am going to have a good attitude. Even though all I want to do is have a small temper tantrum and impulse book a trip to the Caribbean. I am going to enjoy wearing these tights and these boots knowing a day will come where I will want for this outfit. I am going to love layering a sweater over a flannel because someday soon layering a shirt over my bra is going to be too much. I am going to think positively.

However, I might impulse book a trip to the Caribbean.  I am not perfect.

What item of clothing are you dreaming of right now?

the time it was Spring

It’s Spring today. Like for real. Today it’s 60 degrees out according to the weather channel my car thermometer. Which after the last few weeks feels like 83 degrees. Which means it is Spring today. If only for one day. And Harvey and I, we are going to freakin enjoy it.

It’s Spring today. Like for real. Today several boxes showed up at my ‘job’. And guess what was inside? My online boutique’s SPRING LINE. (Oh I forgot to mention, my day job is running an online boutique with my mom. It doesn’t seem fair to call it a job so from this point forward let’s just call it our adventure). Since fulfilling one of my childhood dreams of opening the boutique in 2012, along with eating crepes under the Eiffel Tower and wearing tutus in my everyday life,  I have lived in retail time. In the Spring I am thinking of Fall and in the Fall I am planning for Spring, rareley. But for a few days I get to enjoy the arrivals of the line for the actual season we are currently enjoying. And Spring, you are gorgeous. Both inside and out. At least for one day.

It’s Spring today. Like for real. And I am enjoying getting to wear Toms with no socks and not worrying about my feet being cold or wet or covered in snow. I am enjoying getting to wear this amazing sweater (SO CHEAP) without having to layer. I am enjoying wearing a scarf for fashion rather than pure necessity. I am enjoying how vital a part of my wardrobe these green pants are becoming. I am enjoying wearing necklaces as bracelets. I am enjoying dreaming of summer vacations. I am enjoying my dirty hair thrown into a bun. I am enjoying the adventure that Tuesday brings.

It’s Spring today. Like for real. What are you doing with it?

I know it is so trendy to hate Valentines Day. All the cool kids are doing it. They all ignore it and call it a Hallmark Holiday. But you know what, I am NOT on board with that train. I, Mallory Kirsten Lutz Kammeyer am a Holidayaholic. I love them all. But Valentines Day, well any holiday that encourages eating copious amounts of sweets (cupcakes, cookies, chocolate covered strawberries, OMGOMGOMG) and large glasses of champagne and wine in public, without judgment. Oh I am so in.

The thing I am not in for, the crowds. I am not a very patient person. In fact I am downright impatient. And the thing that makes my skin crawl the most (other than stand still traffic) is waiting for tables. In crowds. Of over-perfumed people. No thank you.

So this year, instead of getting in line at an over stuffed restaurant, my parents and Joel and I are celebrating Valentine’s Eve. Here is how you do it: You just go out on the evening before Valentine’s Day and then do everything the same as you would if it were Valentines Day. It’s amazing. And genius.

This is what I am wearing today and into the evening. I love it because it is wonderfully red but also such fun. The top and skirt are both from Target, both sale rack finds and both so stinkin cheap.

Don’t you worry though, we will still have our own little celebration tomorrow. Just in our own house. Where we rarely have to wait for a table. Unless Harvey is entertaining. But he isn’t seeing anyone this year. So we should be good.

the time I wore jeans as sweatpants

IMG_5919 IMG_5920IMG_5922 IMG_5924Cardigan-Seen here//T-shirt-Target//Jeans-Seen here//Shoes-Toms

I work from home. Which means getting dressed for work in the morning sometimes means brushing my teeth and throwing on a sweatshirt over my jammies. This is not good. Actually this is down right bad. Also, when your husband calls you out for wearing the same Mount Gay Rum promotional t-shirt for 2.5 days straight its time to make some changes. Also, it’s time to do some laundry.

So for the last few days I have been really making an effort to get up and actually put on real clothes. Like the kind of clothes I could run out of my house if it were, say, on fire without contemplating a quick outfit change.

This jeans-oversized t-shirt-cardigan combo has become my go to uniform if you will. And when I really want to feel fancy I thrown on sparkly Toms-they are like the tuxedo of slip ons or holiday themed socks. Because who doesn’t love a holiday themed sock. And you want to know a secret, I feel like I get just a little bit more done. You know, being dressed for success and all.

Todays outfit was pretty cheap. And pretty cute. If I may say so myself. Plus, I have never slept in any of these articles of clothing.

See you later alligators.

Well, it’s Monday again. It seems no matter how many insults you throw its way, not matter how much you avoid it and ignore it’s very existence it just keeps showing up. Every week. However, one of my New Years Resolutions (read more about my thoughts on them here) was to embrace  Mondays or at least not be such a flipping slave to them.

So this Monday I am wearing a skirt ($12.99), some fun textured tights, and a great pair of boots. Because if there has to be a monday you might as well dress for it. The sweater has already made its debut in the 30 day $300 challenge (more here) and I am loving how versatile it has proven to be.

This Monday I am going to come out victorious. I am getting a lot of work done, I am hanging with Harvey who happens to be following my lead wearing a very fancy bow tie this Monday, I am headed to a new found favorite yoga class this evening with a good friend. The Bachelor is on this evening and I plan on wearing this hot pink stocking cap throughout all of my daily activities.

Total cost: Sweater:$11.00 //Skirt: $12.99//Hat:$3.99 Total:$27.98

Make your Monday absolutely amazing.
