the time I was Kelly Kapowski

I have always had a thing for Kelly Kapowski. As a brunette unwilling to ever lighten my hair, the role models were few and far between. Apparently our hair color makes us really exceptional side kicks ready to join any adventure but totally inadequate at hosting our own. Kelly was the freaking star and she was amazing and wonderful and she got the guy in the end and she taught me so many vital lessons during my youth (and occasionally on present day Saturday mornings when Joel and I are bored). And she did all of this as a brunette. And usually in a high waisted skirt and Keds. Or a matching floral crop top and denim. Or in light wash ripped jeans.

Which leads us to this little number in which i was apparently channeling her. The sweater and lace tank are such a cute combo. The shoes were a Top Shop find on their opening weekend in NYC-aka the worst day to enter Top Shop EVER. But these jeans… these jeans are rocking my whole world right now. I love them. I want to wear them every day. I have tried. I even tried to wear them to Joel’s hometown of Concordia, Missouri. It’s a lovely place. If you haven’t been I would suggest a drive through. It’s a small town meant for a Lifetime Movie. I am sure there are some Kapowski fans there, however, when i slipped these ripped up little beauties on Joel suggested I change. He didn’t think Concordia would understand the purchase of pre-destroyed jeans much less revel in their amazingness. Maybe next year.

So for now these jeans will be confined to Kansas City. And I will try to wear them only every other day. Until my floral crop top and matching denim arrives of course.

the time it was Spring

It’s Spring today. Like for real. Today it’s 60 degrees out according to the weather channel my car thermometer. Which after the last few weeks feels like 83 degrees. Which means it is Spring today. If only for one day. And Harvey and I, we are going to freakin enjoy it.

It’s Spring today. Like for real. Today several boxes showed up at my ‘job’. And guess what was inside? My online boutique’s SPRING LINE. (Oh I forgot to mention, my day job is running an online boutique with my mom. It doesn’t seem fair to call it a job so from this point forward let’s just call it our adventure). Since fulfilling one of my childhood dreams of opening the boutique in 2012, along with eating crepes under the Eiffel Tower and wearing tutus in my everyday life,  I have lived in retail time. In the Spring I am thinking of Fall and in the Fall I am planning for Spring, rareley. But for a few days I get to enjoy the arrivals of the line for the actual season we are currently enjoying. And Spring, you are gorgeous. Both inside and out. At least for one day.

It’s Spring today. Like for real. And I am enjoying getting to wear Toms with no socks and not worrying about my feet being cold or wet or covered in snow. I am enjoying getting to wear this amazing sweater (SO CHEAP) without having to layer. I am enjoying wearing a scarf for fashion rather than pure necessity. I am enjoying how vital a part of my wardrobe these green pants are becoming. I am enjoying wearing necklaces as bracelets. I am enjoying dreaming of summer vacations. I am enjoying my dirty hair thrown into a bun. I am enjoying the adventure that Tuesday brings.

It’s Spring today. Like for real. What are you doing with it?

I know it is so trendy to hate Valentines Day. All the cool kids are doing it. They all ignore it and call it a Hallmark Holiday. But you know what, I am NOT on board with that train. I, Mallory Kirsten Lutz Kammeyer am a Holidayaholic. I love them all. But Valentines Day, well any holiday that encourages eating copious amounts of sweets (cupcakes, cookies, chocolate covered strawberries, OMGOMGOMG) and large glasses of champagne and wine in public, without judgment. Oh I am so in.

The thing I am not in for, the crowds. I am not a very patient person. In fact I am downright impatient. And the thing that makes my skin crawl the most (other than stand still traffic) is waiting for tables. In crowds. Of over-perfumed people. No thank you.

So this year, instead of getting in line at an over stuffed restaurant, my parents and Joel and I are celebrating Valentine’s Eve. Here is how you do it: You just go out on the evening before Valentine’s Day and then do everything the same as you would if it were Valentines Day. It’s amazing. And genius.

This is what I am wearing today and into the evening. I love it because it is wonderfully red but also such fun. The top and skirt are both from Target, both sale rack finds and both so stinkin cheap.

Don’t you worry though, we will still have our own little celebration tomorrow. Just in our own house. Where we rarely have to wait for a table. Unless Harvey is entertaining. But he isn’t seeing anyone this year. So we should be good.

Well, it’s Monday again. It seems no matter how many insults you throw its way, not matter how much you avoid it and ignore it’s very existence it just keeps showing up. Every week. However, one of my New Years Resolutions (read more about my thoughts on them here) was to embrace  Mondays or at least not be such a flipping slave to them.

So this Monday I am wearing a skirt ($12.99), some fun textured tights, and a great pair of boots. Because if there has to be a monday you might as well dress for it. The sweater has already made its debut in the 30 day $300 challenge (more here) and I am loving how versatile it has proven to be.

This Monday I am going to come out victorious. I am getting a lot of work done, I am hanging with Harvey who happens to be following my lead wearing a very fancy bow tie this Monday, I am headed to a new found favorite yoga class this evening with a good friend. The Bachelor is on this evening and I plan on wearing this hot pink stocking cap throughout all of my daily activities.

Total cost: Sweater:$11.00 //Skirt: $12.99//Hat:$3.99 Total:$27.98

Make your Monday absolutely amazing.

Ok, it’s time for Fun Facts Fridays (because who doesn’t love a great F alliteration?)

A. Sex and the City debuted on HBO 16 years ago (OMGOMGOMG I think that makes me old).

B. Sex and the City inspired my love affair with fashion as I tuned in every week to check out the new and wacky ensembles that Carrie and the gals ‘threw’ together.

C. I purchased my first ‘Mallory’ necklace at the age of 18 in Chicago. Just like Carrie’s. (For those you keeping track that was in 2002)

D. I still watch the entire series at least once a year.

E. I am a total fashion cliche.

F. I am wearing plaid pants today.

Ok, so the point of this SATC flashback all hinges on these plaid pants along with this graphic t. When I first laid eyes on these pants it was love. My mind immediately sorted through my internal fashion files and pulled together a look from SATC Season 2. The episode was called The Awful Truth and for the most miniscule of scenes Carrie talks on the phone in her apartment wearing  plaid pants and a vintage t. And for whatever reason this look resonated with me. At age 15, when this episode first aired, i thought this was what fashionistas wore in their downtime. Like this is what Carrie Bradshaw would wear to the grocery store or to Hobby Lobby if she lived in Central Iowa.

Unknown

So, today I ran errands in a similar look. Still sticking with our agreement-all outfits from the $300 collection for the month of February. These plaid pants I have on are from Macy’s. They were $12. I feel like I stole them they were so cheap.  Both the graphic t and the cardigan are from Target’s sale rack. The t-shirt was $3.99 and the cardigan was $4.99. I have to say, wearing something other than jeans and a north face fleece to run errands in does change your outlook. It also makes people think you are a tiny bit bonkers…Oh well.

Total cost of the outfit: $20.98

Total cost of Carries similar outfit from 1998: $2,948*

Oh and for any of you out there that also LOVED SATC here is a little funny to start your weekend off right.

the time I had to go outside

Flannel-Target//Sweater-Target//Jeans-American Eagle//Boots-Born old//Parka-Lands End because that what this has come to…

So for those of you not residing in KC, we got some snow. Like a lot of snow. Like 10+ inches of snow. And no one had to go to work, or run errands or even leave their house. It was amazing. Like 2 straight Christmas Days. And then it ended. Apparently the streets are clear and the time has come for us to all re-enter the world. But the snow is not gone. And the temperatures are not warmer and I don’t wanna.

But I must. I think I am forgetting how to interact with the human race (outside of Joel and Harvey). And we are out of milk. And Chocolate Ale was delivered to my local grocer this morning. And Macy’s is having a sale. That I can’t even participate in. Because I am not shopping for 30 days. So I will focus on the Chocolate Ale. Yum.

In any means dressing for this kind of cold is challenging. Especially when you are taking pictures of yourself and showing them to the world  interwebs. And even more so when you have limited your very vast wardrobe to a much smaller and less expensive set of clothes. But I faced the windchill and fashion won and I didn’t even have to use any animal prints.

The sweater and flannel were both Target sale rack finds and the skinnies were purchased on an American Eagle super sale just for this project. However, these jeans are so stinkin comfortable and fit so nicely that I may have to revisit their jean department. (You know, in 26 days) Watch out tweens: 30 year olds everywhere are going to storm American Eagles in search of these super soft, stretchy and oh-so-affordable jeans.

Total Cost: Flannel-$13//Sweater-$11//Denim-$20

Stay warm and fabulous. Until tomorrow darlings.

We need to talk. I mean seriously. I am turning 30 in a few (like less than two) short months. I am not stressed out about this. My life has been amazing and I assume it will go on being amazing regardless of what number my age starts with. The only thing I worry about is my wardrobe. Does it have to change after the big birthday? Can I still wear jean shorts in the summer? Can I still pull off a mini skirt? Can I still get by with a bikini? Most importantly do I have to forgo the 2014 crop top trend?

I haven’t figured out the answers to any of these yet. So I decided to go ahead and jump on the crop top train before the birthday, you know, just in case. This crop is actually a yoga shirt. I love a multi purpose item. I have worn super casually for yoga but I also love it just as much with a silk maxi. Now that is one heck of a two-for (read toofur).

It’s true you can’t actually see any skin in this crop, but it is still winter, and 30 is still breathing down my neck. But the only thing I like about rules is breaking them. So don’t be too surprised when I show up on here and in your real life in a true crop top with skin and all well after said birthday. Cause why the heck not.

Have a beautiful day. Break some rules!
